Tao Te Schwing! Chapter 1

The Tao Te Ching is undeniably, one of human civilisations most enlightened texts.

If you’ve read any of it, you will have noticed how much of an influence it has had on the development of The Attraction Institute philosophy, through it’s impact on my personal development.

So, as an homage to this incredible piece of work, I’m going to write the Tao Te Schwing – a complete rewrite designed to bring the Tao into the modern world of dating, relationships, and personal growth in the 21st century.

If you haven’t read it or are unfamiliar with the philosophy of Taoism, start with The Tao of Pooh. It’ll break you in gently before the Tao Te Ching punches you in the stomach, steals your favourite pair of sneakers and makes out with your sister.

So, without further ado, here is:

Tao Te Schwing Chapter 1

The attraction that can be spoken is not the real attraction
The flame that can be named is not the eternal flame
The nameless is the origin of lust and desire
The named is lost in images in the sand
Thus, constantly without rules, one experiences the essence
Constantly, with rules, one observes manifestations
These emerge together but differ in flavour
Unity is said to be the mystery
Mystery of mysteries, the door to all wonders

Lets take a quick vote: do you get it or does all of this fly straight over your head?

If no, what confused you?

If yes, what does it mean to you?

I’m gonna do a line by line breakdown of what I think it means:

Speaking about being attracted, isn’t really being attracted; it’s the unspoken feeling that subtly comes through every action you take, every word you speak, and everything you don’t do.

Attracting women isn’t the end goal in life.

The essence of a man, his core values, is where attraction originates.

Those who say attraction is a specific set of steps are lost in ever changing ideas and conclusions, as the rules they set are broken again and again.

Thus, when life is lived by adherence to your values, (sanctioned and endorsed by your independent thought and based on creating what you value (honesty, justice, etc.), not on taking value) you experience the root of true, elemental attraction.

When life is lived by adherence to rules (followed only to take value from others), manifestations of living by values may be seen, but not the true essence.

Both of these may appear exactly the same on the surface from a distance, yet living them it’s easy to tell a difference.

Unifying the actions with the mindset is the tricky part.

The ultimate challenge, which leads to realizing the wildest dreams when accomplished.

How’d I do? The last two I’m not exactly sure on, but I think I have the rest down. That’s insanely impressive that you condensed all that into those few, simple lines.

It’s a good try – and close enough. The funny thing is that the Tao Te Ching doesn’t have an exact meaning and so therefore, the Tao Te Schwing doesn’t have one either.

The meaning that you take from it is the ‘real’ meaning because it’s real for you.

What’s more important than what you think it means is what do you do with it?

Wow… Things are moving very fast here George. I’m not sure I’m ready for this level of commitment ;-)

Seriously, that’s great to hear. What is it about this that you love so much?

Ahaahaha true it’s okay you’ll be ready some day and on that day I shall be a happy man lol :p
I love it because like Tao, if you try to think about it, it’s gone. Just like attraction
So I like how you put it into this context of taaaaaaao de schwingg (ps I like the name too haha)

Very interesting article. I never heard about those two books but I’ll check them out.
By the way, I liked Grant interpretation!! These are my thoughts and I had to read the text several times to get this (there is a lot from the Power Of Now here):

The first three sentences are easy.

“The named is lost in images in the sand”
The named (attraction/flame) doesn’t last forever. Images in the sand are easy to erase.

“Thus, constantly without rules, one experiences the essence”
Without rules I can experience Being

“Constantly, with rules, one observes manifestations”
With rules I can only observe “physical” manifestations and those can me named. Thus, they don’t last forever

“These emerge together but differ in flavour”
Manifestations can take any shape but they are still just “temporal things”.

“Unity is said to be the mystery”
There are no dichotomies as we think, that’s the mystery. We think we need a partner to be complete, but we are complete just by ourselves.

“Mystery of mysteries, the door to all wonders”
The answer is in unity. We should try to find unity and we should try to be present with Being

There is a community of the spirit.
Join it, and feel the delight
of walking in the noisy street
    and being the noise.
    Drink all your passion,
    and be a disgrace.
    Close both eyes
to see with the other eye

I’ve been reading some leadership studies at Aalto school of *Economies and this reminds me of the idea that all the chit chat in our minds are actually words some important people said to us. So in other words at bus you might as an adult still hear your mothers instructions how to get out of bus and when to push the stop-button. Or your dad’s critical voice every time you try to perform something that matters to you. Sometimes it might even be voices of silence from times you were left out and couldn’t connect with anyone. Also the reason you think in English and I think in Finnish. So it is good to remind ourselves who is speaking and so gain the power to change how we think to see the beauty of the world and feel the deepest of our lust in our own style. Because our thinking style is how we want the voices of our loved ones in our heads to speak and to be heard. I got a bit artistic here :p

i’m letting it sink in. it makes sense on a subconscious level, i’m not going to try and dissect it, just let it register. it generally means that we create our own reality through our own constructs.
